Can I go swimming in a luxury watch?

“Can I go swimming in a luxury watch?”

This is a question that I am often asked by our clients. Of course what they are referring to is whether their watch is water resistant – will it leak and ruin the movement, dial and hands?

There are usually three areas that need to be considered when the water resistance of a watch is under examination;
<ul>
 	<li>the caseback</li>
 	<li>the glass</li>
 	<li>the crown</li>
</ul>
During testing, these three components are checked for condition and damage or corrosion. Next the seals fitted between the component and the case are inspected and often replaced. The watch is then pressure tested using a purpose built piece of equipment. When it passes – voila! Your watch is waterproof.

So yes, if it passes the test, you CAN go swimming in a luxury watch. But hang on, there’s another question that needs to be asked ……

I can’t imagine a more hostile environment for a luxury watch than a beach with its salt and sand, or a swimming pool full of chlorine, steel and ceramic tiles. And that’s before you even mention the water! So our advice would be – “yes you can swim in a luxury watch but NO, you probably shouldn’t.”

If you’re at the pool or the beach – relax, forget about the time! Or, if you’re like me and feel a bit lost without something stylish on your wrist, switch your luxury time piece for a much more practical G-Shock!

In 1970 Tudor entered the chronograph market with a watch that was very different from its Rolex Daytona brethren – The two incarnations of the ’Monte-Carlo’ were bold, bright and colourful and occupied their own place in the Rolex family lineup, as a slightly inferior model to the Daytona.

Then in 1976 there was a shift and the ‘Big Blocks’ were born. Far from establishing a point of difference from the Rolex Daytona by continuing with the ‘fun’ slightly ‘junior’ theme, Tudor made a watch that was similar to the Daytona and in one key way, actually superior….

As well as toning down the colour palette and producing monochrome chronographs (although exotic-dialed 9000-series ‘Big Block Monte Carlos’ were made), Tudor adopted the Valjoux 7750 movement, not only adding an extra chrono sub dial but also a quick set date and an automatic movement. This automatic movement made the Big Block the first self-winding chronographs from the Rolex group – it would take Rolex themselves well over ten years to make an automatic Daytona and 25 years to make one with an in house movement.

As well as an advanced set of features, the Valjoux movement brought with it the necessity for a deeper case than its predecessors to house the self-winding mechanism and rotor, hence the nickname “Big Block”.

The first Big Blocks were the 9400’s consisting of three references that gave the option of three different bezels:
<ul class="ul1">
 	<li class="li1">9420 with an acrylic tachymeter bezel</li>
 	<li class="li1">9421 with a 12-hour calibrated rotating bezel</li>
 	<li class="li1">9430 with a steel tachymeter bezel</li>
</ul>
In the late 1980’s, the 9400 series was replaced by the 79100 series of Big Blocks and again, there were three references with three bezel types:
<ul class="ul1">
 	<li class="li1">79160 with a black plastic tachymeter bezel</li>
 	<li class="li1">79170 with a black graduated 12-hour rotating bezel;</li>
 	<li class="li1">79180 with a steel tachymeter bezel.</li>
</ul>
<p class="p1">By the mid 1990’s Montres TUDOR S.A. was 50 years old and they started to made decisive moves to differentiate themselves from their Rolex brothers. As a consequence the direct references to Rolex were steadily disappearing from the cases, winding crowns and bracelets of Tudor watches to be replaced with own brand alternatives and the day of the Big Block was over.</p>

The Tudor ‘Big Block’

If you’re reading this then you probably agree with my assertion that a special watch can become a very important part of a person’s life.

&nbsp;

In fact, Patek Philippe’s ‘Generations’ adverts tell us that “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation”. I’ve recently discovered that passing a watch between generations is not only a very special experience but that it can work in both directions.

&nbsp;

While posted to Germany with the RAF in 1962, my father bought a rather lovely gold Omega dress watch. Sixty odd years ago such watches were worn on a daily basis and that’s what my dad did throughout my childhood so it’s fair to say that it was a familiar sight and I got to know it pretty well.

&nbsp;

While walking on the beach one day in the late 1980’s, dad felt momentary confusion when the seconds hand of his watch snagged on the fabric of his shorts – he knew that something was wrong with this scenario but couldn’t immediately figure out what it was …. When he looked down, he realised that the bezel and plexi had both fallen off his watch and into the sand never to be seen again, exposing the hands to the elements, and to his shorts.

A quick discussion with the local Omega AD confirmed that the watch was beyond economical repair and the insurance company quickly replaced it with a horrible champagne dialled quartz monstrosity (It was the ‘80s after all).

&nbsp;

Fast forward 25 years and this all came up in conversation over lunch one Sunday. Dad said that he had his old watch in a drawer somewhere and I asked if I could have it. I was delighted when he said that of course I could and went to find it.

&nbsp;

I sat there remembering the beautiful round gold case, the white dial with its delicate gold hands and markers and the black leather strap.

&nbsp;

I was very excited by the time he came back to the table but when he opened his hand, he revealed something that looked less like it belonged at a garden party and more like it had been dug up in a garden.

&nbsp;

Of course, the lack of the bezel and plexi had left the dial and hands exposed to the damp air for the previous twenty odd years and this had wrought havoc. Everything was mottled and corroded and looked a real mess – ‘patina’ wasn’t the word.

&nbsp;

When I looked at the case, I could see that it wasn’t solid gold (not a surprise as my parents were never wealthy) but gold plated, and the plating had worn through on many of the edges, revealing the base metal underneath. He did wear the watch daily for over 25 years after all.

&nbsp;

The lovely black Omega strap and matching gold-plated buckle were also lost forever leaving just the case, movement, dial, and hands, all of which were in a real mess. However, this watch was a member of the family and being a confirmed ‘watch guy’, I had no choice but to rescue it.

&nbsp;

I called on many contacts, each of whom set about tackling a different part of the challenge as they replated the case, made a new bezel from 18ct gold, restored the dial and hands, serviced the movement, and fitted a new plexi.

&nbsp;

When it came back, I treated it to a new leather Omega strap with period Omega gold plated buckle and put it in the correct Omega box.

&nbsp;

Of course, all of this work took many months, destroyed the originality of the watch and cost far more than it was worth to anyone but my family, but it was worth every penny.

&nbsp;

Initially it had been my intention to keep the watch as my dress watch but as soon as I saw it all together, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to hold on to it and that it had to go to someone who would appreciate it properly. It was close to Christmas and so I wrapped it all up in festive paper and put it under the tree.

When he opened his surprise present on Christmas Day, there were real tears in dad’s eyes as he told me that it was like “meeting a very old friend who hadn’t changed a bit in all of these years”.

&nbsp;

Nowadays he still wears his old Omega for special occasions, and I know that one day it will come to me and then to my son – not for a long while yet though. This is a piece of family history that will pass from generation to generation and will take a little bit of my dad with it wherever it goes – a very special watch that has become a very important part of our lives.

<p>This Glashütte Original Sixties Panorama Date is an absolutely classic stainless steel Swiss dress watch.</p>
<p>The stainless steel case is beautifully proportioned and the gold hands and markers look very classy against the dial which shifts from cream to silver in the light.</p>
<p>Bought in 2011 and lightly worn, it's in excellent condition and has just been serviced by Glashütte and comes with the service box.</p>
<p>It also comes with its original boxes - they've degraded a bit as boxes of the period had a habit of doing - as well as the original papers.</p>
<p>A beautiful dress watch that's just a bit different.</p>
