If you are wanting to wear your Omega watch, pick something that has style longevity, suits your style and your wrist.

There are literally hundreds of watches to choose from, varying in size, colour, purpose and so on.

• The Omega Seamaster Diver is a modern take on the dive watch, worn for years by Bond, James Bond. The case is bigger (up to 42mm) but not bulky, so ideal sports watch for a daily wearer.

• The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean is a bigger dive watch than the others with a helium release valve and deeper depth rating. Perfect for ‘actual’ divers or for those that like something substantial on their wrist.

• The Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra is a slighter dressier take on the Seamaster and while still sporty, is more suited to a three piece suit than a wetsuit.

For a man, it’s all about confidence. If you feel comfortable going big and will wear a 43mm + proudly, then it will look good. If you’re going to be self-conscious, then pick something classic like a Seamaster 300 or the Aqua Terra.

We mentioned above about the fact that vintage tend to be smaller in fact, the Omega Speedmaster was 4mm smaller in the 1960’s than it is now. So, if you like a slightly smaller vintage look, then this might be for you.

On the other hand, if you want to wear your Speedmaster every day, then you should go for a newer one as the 321 movement from the 1960’s can be fragile and expensive to repair.

Modern watches are more robust due to developments in technology and therefore are more hard wearing and suited to regular as opposed to occasional wear.

<p>With a depth rating of 4000 feet, the famous Ploprof  has a long history as Omega's most water-resistant divers' watch. This version has  Omega's Master Chronometer Calibre 8912 renowned for its anti-magnetic resistance, superlative timekeeping, and precision.</p>
<p>The titanium case has an orange ceramic bezel ring with Super-LumiNova numerals, triangle and scale for increased visibility. The dial is also made of titanium, with orange and white hands.  The polished titanium "sharkproof" mesh bracelet adds to the clearly signalled purpose of this watch.</p>

When buying or owning a luxury watch, we understand that you might feel a bit silly or naive asking the question – is this a self winding watch? But trust us, the answer isn’t that simple and therefore it is a great question.

&nbsp;

In fact, as a professional watch trader I recommend this be one of the first questions you ask when buying a pre-owned luxury watch and/or if your new purchase suddenly stops working.

Ultimately the answer depends on what type of watch you’ve got. Broadly speaking, there are three types of watch movement: quartz, manual and automatic. So, let’s take them one at a time.

&nbsp;

Plus, keep reading to the bottom where we have included a quick reference table of example watches under each type of movement.
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm;"><strong><span style="font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;">Quartz Movement</span></strong></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm;">The movement of a quartz watch is powered by a battery. It never needs to be wound up. It just runs efficiently and accurately until the battery dies and then you pop in another one and away you go. A quartz watch never needs winding. This is a not a self winding watch.</p>
&nbsp;
<p style="margin: 0cm;"><strong><span style="font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;">Manual Movement</span></strong></p>

<p style="margin: 0cm;">This is a mechanical watch movement powered by a mainspring that must be wound by hand in the old-fashioned way. Probably the most famous of all hand wound watches is the Omega Speedmaster, which was chosen for NASA space missions because automatic movements don’t work in zero gravity.</p>
&nbsp;
<p style="margin: 0cm;">Once fully wound, a Speedmaster will run for between 48 and 50 hours before it stops and needs to be wound again. Of course, there is no problem with winding the main spring in the meantime to keep it fully wound so that it never stops. Again – this is not a self winding watch.</p>
&nbsp;
<p style="margin: 0cm;"><strong><span style="font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;">Automatic Movement (Self Winding)</span></strong></p>
The first automatic movement was designed at the end of the 18th century and its design is usually attributed to Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Perrelet. Of course, as with many things horological, the glory was subsequently taken by Hans Wilsdorf’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual movement which was patented in 1931.

&nbsp;

These days, most quality Swiss watch movements are automatic or self winding and this is considered to be the standard. A rotor is attached to the watches movement so that when you move your wrist, the rotor spins and winds the watch back up again by tightening the mainspring.

&nbsp;

The amount of time that an automatic watch will run off the wrist before stopping is called the “power reserve“. The power reserve of most quality self winding watches these days is between 48 and 72 hours.

&nbsp;

Any watchmakers who achieve more than this quite rightly considers it a significant feat so sometimes you will see a watch described as “8 Days” or maybe even “12 Days”. This refers to the fact that the particular watch has a power reserve far and away above the average.

&nbsp;

Once the mainspring is fully charged, an automatic watch worn daily will run without stopping until the movement needs to be serviced.
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;"><strong>Does this mean that an automatic watch never needs winding?</strong></span></p>
No, it doesn’t, and this is the not so simple bit.

&nbsp;

When it first leaves the factory, it’s possible that the auto movement of the watch will work so efficiently that it will charge the main spring to its full power just based on the kinetic energy of the movement of your wrist. Once that watch becomes a few years old however, this becomes increasingly unlikely. It’s also unlikely when a watch sits unworn for an extended period of time.

&nbsp;

We always recommend that if an automatic watch has stopped through lack of movement, the main spring should be fully charged through winding before its worn. This gives the automatic movement every opportunity to operate efficiently and as expected and keep your watch, running accurately.

The most important thing to remember when winding your watch is to take it off your wrist first. Winding your watch while you’re still wearing it puts undue pressure on the crown stem and can cause damage to the movement.

&nbsp;

Then unscrew or pull out the crown to the winding position (you will feel the spring release) and wind it 40 to 50 times in a forward direction. On an automatic watch, you will not feel any increased resistance when winding, so just stop when you’ve reached the full amount. On a manual wind watch, you will feel the increased resistance from the tightening mainspring and when full resistance is reached, you won’t be able to wind it any further. Continuing to force the crown forwards once fully wound will damage your movement so a little empathy can be required.

As well as following our watch winding advice, it’s a good idea to have your watch serviced by an authorized service centre for the brand or by the brand itself once every five years. During those years, the lubricants in the watch could have dried up. While it is serviced you can also ask to have scratches removed from the metal case or bracelet. However, if you value the originality of the watch, don’t let the service centre replace the dial or hands.

<strong>1. Investment, Pleasure or Both?</strong>

If you’re buying purely for investment, then you don’t need to worry about the style of watch. Rather, you need to focus on whether a model is desirable now and whether it is likely to be so for the foreseeable future. So, my top three tips …

• Always go for a watch with the widest appeal and the most limited supply.
• If it’s purely for investment purposes, buy the very best example you can find. After all you don’t have to worry about damaging it if it’s only going to sit in your safe.
• Make sure you buy a Full Set – box, papers, service records and accessories.

<strong>2. Style</strong>

American President of IWC, Edouard D’Arbaumont said in a 2016 interview that “We don’t think anybody is buying our watches to tell time. It’s all about the DNA, the history of our product, and what is behind our watches. We must tell stories, like in the film industry.”

As such, IWCs watches are more about the exclusivity and sense of occasion they bring to the wearer, and while watches do tell the time, this makes perfect sense for all luxury watches, which many times are worn as a piece of jewellery, craftsmanship, and history.

IWC have several flagship collections including the Portugieser, Aquatimer, Ingenieur, Da Vinci and Portofino. However, they have been forever associated with military, particularly Pilot, style watches since their ‘Special Pilot’s Watch’ was launched in 1936.

The three main types of IWC watch are.

1) The Mark Series – these are very plain and straight forward military style watches. A historically accurate representation of the famous IWC military watches of the mid 20th Century. Case sizes tend to be relatively small and dials simple and easy to read. Usually found on leather straps, very occasionally available on a bracelet.

2) The Pilot Series – this is IWC’s modern take on the classic Pilot’s watch, made with a larger case than the Mark Series. These often have added chronograph and date functions. Again, usually found on leather straps.

3) The Dress Watches – the IWC Portugeiser and Portofino watches are some of the finest dress watches available today. Case sizes tend to be on the large side, especially with the Portugeiser. They are characterised by their beautiful clear dials often coloured matched with high quality leather straps.
Their first luxury sports watch – the Ingenieur was designed in 1976 by Gerald Genta, designer of several iconic watches, such as the Patek Philippe Nautilus and Audemars Piguet.
The Ingenieur is a relatively rare sighting compared to the other models. It offers excellent value for money compared to other Gerald Genta designs, if you can find one!

<strong>3. Size</strong>

Does matter when it comes to watches?

It all comes down to confidence and perspective. Just because you’re small in stature, doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t carry off a larger timepiece. In fact, it’s very much the fashion for women to wear oversized men’s watches.

For a man, it’s all about confidence. If you feel comfortable going big and will wear a 46mm proudly, then a Portugeiser Chronograph will look good. If you’re going to be self-conscious, then pick something classic like a Mark XVI.

<strong>4. Vintage or Modern</strong>

The choice between a vintage or modern watch is partly one of personal taste and partly one of robustness. Vintage models tend to be smaller, so if you prefer this look, then something like a 1970’s Tuning Fork would be a lovely choice (see above, it’s not literal).

On the other hand, if you want to wear your IWC every day, then you should probably go for a newer one as the movements from the older models are more fragile and expensive to repair than later versions. More modern IWC’s tend to have bracelet options if that is your preference.

Servicing costs for a vintage watch can be higher and parts hard to come by – two important considerations when choosing between modern and vintage pre owned IWC watches.

<strong>5. Fashion or Function</strong>

What do you want your pre-owned IWC watch for? Assuming of course you’re not circumnavigating the world, is it simply to tell the time or do you need it to fly?

If you do want a pilot’s watch because you are a pilot, the 3706 models are the best place to start.

If you’re simply looking for a fantastic watch made to the highest of standards, then you can have some fun choosing.

<p>This IWC Aquatimer Automatic 2000 is a very cool diver’s watch from IWC Schaffhausen, one of the most famous of all the Swiss watch manufacturers. Everything is perfect on the watch and it looks hardly worn.  Even the rubber shows virtually no signs of wear.</p>
<p>Serviced by IWC in 2023, it is still covered by their warranty and the movement is in the same excellent condition as the case.</p>
<p>The stainless steel case houses a Superluminova dial with baton indexes and with the double marker at 12 o’clock and unidirectional ceramic bezel it looks every bit the functional diver. So let’s assume that you have a few really nice watches to choose from – surely you just use whatever one was designed for the job in hand? Well that’s all good if you only wear your GMT Master when you’re flying your ‘plane, the Royal Oak when sailing the yacht and the Patek 5120G while eating Ferrero Rocher. No? We may need a different approach then.

Most people who have more than one watch like to have different styles for different jobs – I know a fortunate lady who switches between a stainless Datejust and a Cartier Panthere for work, wears a bi colour diamond dial DJ for special occasions and a Santos for going to the football …. Makes total sense to me.

I tend to make a choice based on what I’m wearing, and I suppose that’s what most people would do – that’s why you really ‘need’ a sports watch with your jeans, a dress watch with your best suit and something in between for when you’re doing something in between.

That’s where classic watches like the Rolex Explorer I and JLC Reverso come into play – dress them up or dress them down, they will accompany you to all of your less extreme activities and are great ‘go to’ watches

Having said that, we’re all allowed our little quirks and foibles and I have a really odd watch related one – if it’s cold and rainy outside and I’m in the mood for beer &amp; pie type comfort, I ALWAYS wear my 1977 Rolex DRSD. It just makes me feel comfortable and warm – weird huh?

So what should you learn from this?

1) Whatever anyone tells you, there is no one watch that will cover all jobs appropriately.

2) Realistically, if you’re going to do this properly you need three watches *at least.

3) At the end of the day of course there are no rules to any of this and it’s totally, totally up to you.

4) And if I want to wear a DRSD with a dinner suit because there’s no steak and kidney pudding on the menu, then I will …

<p class="p1">This stainless steel Breitling Navitimer 806 is in quite unbelievable condition for a watch of its age.  A particularly well kept example on an original Breitling leather strap with a Breitling buckle.  Everything apart from the strap and buckle are period correct and original to the watch.</p>
<p class="p1">The original black dial is close to perfect with no damage at all and the patina and slight shrinkage on the hour plots and Arabic numerals give everything a proper vintage feel.  The lume on the hands has shrunk slightly and has aged patina that matches the dial perfectly.</p>
<p>The stainless steel case is in incredible condition for a watch that's almost sixty years old and it hasn't been overpolished or had any damage removed - it's all sharp and even.</p>
<p class="p1">The Venus 178 movement has just been serviced by certified watch specialists <a href="https://www.michlmayr.com/"><span class="s1">Michlmayr &amp; Co</span></a> .</p>

Below are 5 key things to consider when buying a pre owned Rolex.

<strong>1. Investment, Pleasure or Both?</strong>

If you’re buying purely for investment, then you don’t need to worry about the style of watch. Rather, you need to focus on whether a model is desirable now and whether it is likely to be so for the foreseeable future. So, my top three tips …

&nbsp;

• Always go for a watch with the widest appeal and the most limited supply.
• If it’s purely for investment purposes, buy the very best example you can find. After all you don’t have to worry about damaging it if it’s only going to sit in your safe.
• Make sure you buy a Full Set – box, papers, service records and accessories.

<strong>2. Style</strong>

There are literally hundreds of Rolex watches to choose from. The most popular and the ones that appear most in our collections tend to be sports references of which there are several. However, the dressier Day Date and Datejust models are also very popular, and they regularly feature in our collection too.

&nbsp;

<strong>Rolex Submariner and GMT Master</strong>

As far as the sports references are concerned, the two most popular ones are:

&nbsp;

• The Rolex Submariner – This comes in Submariner and Submariner Date versions. They were both largely unchanged from 1969 until 2010/2012 when the current ceramic bezel styling was introduced. This was the first and only major change ever to affect the model. The Stainless-Steel Submariner watches have quite understated styling.

&nbsp;

• The Rolex GMT Master – depending upon age, this is available in both GMT Master and GMT Master II versions. The GMT Master was the original, and when they were available simultaneously, was the cheaper of the two versions. These days prices are much more affected by condition, originality, and completeness than they are by which movement is in the watch. Again, depending on age, the steel versions are available with black, black and red (Coke), blue and red (Pepsi), blue and black (Batman), and green and black (Sprite) versions. Because of the coloured bezel, they tend to stand out more than some of the other Rolex sports watches.

<strong>Rolex Day Date and Datejust</strong>
• The Rolex Day Date or ‘Rolex President’ has been a mainstay of the brand since the 1950’s and has traditionally been presented to every US President around the time of their inauguration. Incidentally, ‘President’ is also the name of the bracelet which is only ever used on this model. The Rolex Day Date is only available in precious metals; yellow gold, white gold, or platinum, and consequently has always been one of the more highly priced Rolex models. Traditionally a 36mm watch – although strangely it wears much bigger – the Rolex Day Date is now also available in 41 mm.

• The Rolex Datejust has been an important part of Rolex history since the 1960’s. This is the classic dress Rolex seen on so many wrists and is available in stainless steel or stainless steel and gold versions. The key differentiating feature on the different Rolex Datejust models is the bezel. Over the years they have been available in machined steel, smooth steel, and fluted white gold. It’s important to know which you are looking at because the difference affects the price quite significantly. The other main difference between the versions is the bracelet which is available in either an Oyster or Jubilee. The Oyster bringing a more purposeful look while the Jubilee is more decorative and dressier. Also, traditionally a 36mm watch the Rolex Datejust is now also available in 41 mm.

<strong>3. Size</strong>

Does matter when it comes to watches?

&nbsp;

It all comes down to confidence and perspective.

&nbsp;

Just because you’re small in stature, doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t carry off a larger timepiece. In fact, it’s very much the fashion for women to wear oversized men’s watches.

&nbsp;

For a man, it’s all about confidence. If you feel comfortable going big and will wear a 43mm + proudly, then it will look good. If you’re going to be self-conscious, then pick something classic like a Rolex Oyster Perpetual.

&nbsp;

Most Rolex sports models ever made are 40 mm but recently a few have crept up to 41 mm and 42 mm versions.

&nbsp;

As we mentioned before, the Rolex Day Date and Rolex Datejust are traditionally 36 mm, but the modern ones are 41 mm – if you’re looking for something smaller, older could be better for you.

&nbsp;

<strong>4. Vintage or Modern</strong>

The choice between a vintage or modern watch is partly one of personal taste and partly one of robustness. We mentioned above about the fact that vintage watches tend to be smaller with the Rolex Day Date and Datejust models growing 5 mm over the years. So, if you like a slightly smaller vintage look, then something older might be for you.

&nbsp;

On the other hand, if you want to wear your Rolex every day, then you should probably go for a newer one as the movements from the 1960’s is more fragile and expensive to repair than later versions.

&nbsp;

Bracelets have also changed over the years and newer ones are more hard wearing and comfortable so may be more suited to regular as opposed to occasional wear. Original bracelets for vintage Rolex can also be very valuable, often running into thousands of pounds, so that combined with their relatively fragile nature doesn’t make for a daily wearer.

&nbsp;

Servicing costs for a vintage watch can be higher and parts hard to come by – two important considerations when choosing between modern and vintage pre owned Rolex watches.

<strong>5. Fashion or Function</strong>

What do you want your pre owned Rolex for? Assuming of course you’re not heading to the Mariana Trench, is it simply to tell the time or do you need it to dive in?

If you do want a sports watch for diving say, the Rolex Submariner models are the best place to start.

<p>This Rolex Daytona 116520 is a lovely pre worn example of a white dialled stainless steel Daytona. A 2007 watch, it was serviced by Rolex in 2020 and has hardly been worn since. It still has some service stickers attached.</p>
<p>The case on this watch is 99% perfect and untouched and the engraving on the bezel is strong, clear and crisp.There is no wear to the bracelet or clasp and all together the watch is an excellent example of a classic stainless steel Daytona.</p>

We celebrated our 10-year anniversary on 1st of November 2023, and I was asked to reflect on what I’ve learned over the past 10 years, creating, developing and running Oakleigh Watches.

I think I can confidently say, after 10 years, I am a luxury watch expert. So, keeping with the ‘10’ based theme, here are 10 of the most important things that I’ve learnt running a successful business.

And …… because I couldn’t resist – 10 of my favourite watches from the past ten years.

<strong>1. Believe in yourself</strong>

I once overheard a conversation where someone asked when I was “going to stop messing around and get a proper job?” That was 10 years and £20m in watches ago. Just because they don’t believe in you, don’t let them knock yourself belief.

&nbsp;

<strong>2. Customer service is everything</strong>

I’ve got into this business because I couldn’t find a watch seller who was interested in anything other than money or watches. I love both of those things, but without our customers, we would have neither so we must always remember that customer service is paramount.

&nbsp;

<strong>3. Concentrate on the 'doing' not on the 'winning'</strong>

To be honest, this is a phrase that has been in my mind for the past 35 years. What it really means is that if you do the absolute best that you can, every hour of every day then the end result will take care of itself.

&nbsp;

<strong>4. Honesty is vital</strong>

It’s crucial to both buy well &amp; sell well. Repeat customers are absolutely vital, so it’s important to do right by everybody, all the time. A quick buck can lead to an early demise. Remember to pay it forward.

&nbsp;

<strong>5. There's a wrist for (almost) every watch</strong>

We all make mistakes sometimes (even watch experts), but generally speaking, every good watch will find a home eventually.

<strong>6. Brand integrity is key</strong>

Somebody who I respect &amp; like enormously once told me that I “inhabit my brand”. I think what they meant was that I believe in the brand of Oakleigh so deeply that I live and breathe it, and with that comes authenticity.

<strong>7. Enlist the help of experts</strong>

Understand what you do well and get other experts for everything else. No one is good at everything, so you should find somebody equally as talented in their field as you are in yours to do the things you can’t do. Never try and wing it because it will always end in tears.

&nbsp;

<strong>8. Online and offline are as important as each other</strong>

The future of successful retail is the combination of a great website with personal service. Just because your website is good, doesn’t mean you don’t need to be able to back it up. If you get your SEO right, make your shop window reflect your values and back it up with great customer service you should be onto a good thing.

&nbsp;

<strong>9. Do the right thing!</strong>

Own your mistakes and honour them – if you’re wrong, you’re wrong, so do everything you can to make it right as quickly as possible. Then you will have nothing to be ashamed of and will have earned the right to stand up for yourself when it’s right to.

<strong>10. Love what you do</strong>

Then it won’t feel like work, and your success will be all the sweeter.

Oakleigh Watches Anniversary Chronograph

<p class="p1">To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Oakleigh Watches we produced a very small number of hand made chronographs here in Norwich.</p>
<p>They were produced in two batches of five watches each.  The first batch sold immediately and the second batch is now available.</p>
<p class="p1">The hand finished 36 mm chronograph case has a sapphire case back through which you can see the Valjoux 7750 automatic movement.<span class="Apple-converted-space">  </span>The rotor of the movement is engraved with the company logo and Anniversary details.</p>
<p class="p1">The caseback itself is engraved with the company name and the limited edition number of the individual watch.</p>
<p class="p1">The silver plated dial has 3 sub-dials with a hand turned ‘Clous de Paris’ guilloche pattern and black Roman numeral hour markers and minute track.</p>
<p class="p1">The hands are in the Breguet style and are hand made and blued.</p>
<p class="p1">Each watch is presented in a custom made leather wallet with two alligator patterned leather straps.<span class="Apple-converted-space">  </span>The straps, one in black and another in dark brown, are hand made by The Strap Tailor and finished with an Oakleigh Watches logo buckle.<span class="Apple-converted-space">  </span>They feature a quick change spring bar to make them quickly and easily interchangeable to match the wearers outfit.</p>

Heuer Watch Company was founded in 1860 by Edouard Heuer and is based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. In 1985, Heuer was bought by the TAG Company. The names were combined and a new brand – TAG Heuer was born.

Buying a Pre owned Heuer watch is a good investment as they tend to hold their value well. Vintage models will be more lucrative.

Heuer watches have been in production since 1860 and switched to TAG Heuer in 1985. The models we stock are mainly later reissues of the original 1960’s and 1970’s classic motorsport Heuers.

Choosing the right Heuer

When buying a pre-owned luxury watch, it is not unusual to ask the question – “Is that the original Rolex X, Y or Z?”

Many people can be sticklers for originality. Why is this I wonder?

I suppose it’s because a watch that has had lots of parts replaced is a bit like ‘Trigger’s broom’ and perhaps that 1993 Submariner may not all be that old. Buying an original Rolex, with all the date corresponding parts, can be extremely important to many people.

So what gets changed over time? Why does it happen? And how important is it?

Let’s see shall we…?

<strong>The Dial
</strong>
This is the most obvious and important component of any watch. When it comes to originality and this is the first place that you should look.

With a Rolex there are so many subtle differences, especially with the most collectable models, that it takes a specialist to be really confident of what they’re dealing with. It’s this and this alone which has led us to decline politely whenever we’ve been asked to source a Paul Newman Daytona for a client. It’s a minefield – one that’s certainly possible to cross safely but not a journey that I want to make myself.

At a more straightforward level, the dial of a Rolex can often be dated by the markings that relate to the type of luminous material used on the hour markers. Over the years Rolex watches have been marked with Radium, Tritium, Luminova and Super Luminova. The first two of which were dangerously radioactive to the poor devils who had to work with it.

By looking carefully at the markings at the bottom of the dial which relate to the type of material used – “Swiss”, “Swiss T – &lt; 25”, “T Swiss T”, “Swiss Made” etc., we can tell if the dial is correct for the model and year of the watch.

<strong>Why would you change an Original Rolex dial?
</strong>
There are a few reasons including personal preference (not common), water ingress damage (also uncommon) and the most likely which is deterioration of the existing dial through damp, light or failure.

Over a period of time, watch dials can fade unevenly. The ‘lume’ can detach and the overall finish can deteriorate, sometimes creating what’s known as a ‘spider dial’. Dials also sometimes change colour completely and turn ‘tropical’.

Any of these situations would cause Rolex to replace the dial at service. It is usually both obligatory and chargeable.

The watch would then have what’s known as a ‘service’ or ‘replacement’ dial. It’s a genuine Rolex dial but of a later period than the rest of the watch. There is nothing wrong with a watch like this, although it is worth slightly less than a completely original version.

A service dial is not to be confused with a ‘redial’ which is where the original dial, or sometimes a different dial completely, is repainted by somebody other than Rolex. These dials are considered fake and significantly reduce the value and desirability of the watch.

One measure that is often discussed when deciding if a dial is original is the brightness of the lume. Over time, the luminosity of both the dial and the hands will fade and decades later they should usually no longer glow.

However, the key words here are “should” and “usually”. This method is not infallible because for instance Rolex Submariner dials from the mid 1960’s are well known for retaining luminosity even after fifty years. Ah, the vagaries of the Vintage Rolex.

<strong>Hands
</strong>
The next most important thing to look out for the originality of is the hands. As with the dial, these can sometimes corrode or lose their lume and consequently will be replaced at service or possibly have the lume re applied by a watchmaker.

The same luminosity rules apply as with the dial and a good way to check the originality of the hands is to see whether the lume has faded to the same colour as the dial. Again, far from infallible though because original hands and dials can easily have come from different factory batches and therefore fade at different rates and to different degrees. It is a mistake to think that every component of a vintage watch was originally made at the same time and therefore will age identically.

Generally speaking, non-original hands won’t make a massive difference to the value of the watch unless it is ultra rare and highly collectable but they do make a difference.

<strong>The Bezel Insert
</strong>
On the majority of Rolex sports watches the bezel insert is made of relatively soft aluminium with a painted finish that can quite easily get scratched. Rolex will often change these at service or owners may have them changed through choice.

The originality of the insert isn’t nearly as important as the dial or the hands and if a period insert is required, replacements are readily available at a relatively modest cost.

<strong>The Crystal or Plexi
</strong>
The originality of the crystal or plexiglass can sometimes be important but unfortunately is usually nigh on impossible to guarantee. As long as it is made of the correct material, is of the right profile and is an original Rolex product then any more is very difficult to ascertain.

It is sometimes possible to spot a non original Rolex plexi or crystal by touch and feel although the most obvious giveaway is that replacements sometimes have the wrong degree of magnification on the date ‘cyclops.’ A schoolboy error.

<strong>The Crown
</strong>
Because the crown is regularly used to wind the watch and because it screws into the Oyster case, it is designed to be a service replaceable part. Consequently it is not unusual for any watch over 20 years old or so to have had a replacement crown. As long as it is genuine and of the right style, this is not a problem.

<strong>Internal Components
</strong>
One of the main purposes of servicing a Rolex is to lubricate the internal components, replacing the Rolex original lubricants that dry out over time. A complicated mechanical movement containing dozens of parts is bound to need something replaced from time to time. So some degree of lack of originality is not at all problematic. It is also often impossible to detect without completely stripping the movement down.

<strong>The Bracelet, Strap or Buckle
</strong>
Over time, any leather strap will deteriorate and so on a vintage watch it is likely to have been replaced. Whether it was replaced with an original Rolex strap is largely academic as Rolex don’t make their own straps and so we never advise anyone to get hung up on this as an issue.

Buckles are different because quite often they can be made of a precious metal and if lost, clearly will affect the value of the watch. Also, unlike straps, original buckles will have a specific visual style and replacement buckles can sometimes just look wrong.

Rolex bracelets have changed quite significantly over the years and having the correct type of bracelet i.e. Oyster, Heavy Oyster, Jubilee, President etc is important. Within each type, manufacturing processes have changed over the years and while there are no hard and fast rules for which process was used in precisely which year, there is a progression and fairly accurate guidelines. Consequently it is important to know whether your vintage Rolex bracelet should be riveted, folded or forged to match the age of the watch.

One very helpful factor is that Rolex bracelet clasps usually carry a stamp that can be used to date the bracelet. Bear in mind though that a 1972 watch doesn’t necessarily have to have a 1972 bracelet in order to be original and correct. It all depends on what was available when the watch was put together and for this 1972 watch a bracelet from 1970, ’71 or even ’73 could be perfectly original.

<strong>The Minefield
</strong>

<p>This Heuer Chronograph 1059/33 is an amazing time warp watch, perfect for the collector.</p>
<p>When we took the back off the watch when we bought it, our watchmakers confirmed that it had never been removed before and that the movement has never been serviced.  The movement is exactly as it was when it was made in the mid 1960's.  It's a little dry but is perfect and we have left it untouched.</p>
<p>The case shows only handling marks and the silver sunburst dial and hands are as new.  The orange chronograph hand is as bright as the day it was made 60 years ago.</p>
